What is Tulsi Vivah?
Tulsi Vivah is the symbolic wedding of the holy Tulsi plant with Lord Vishnu as Shaligram, or with Lord Krishna. It is observed on Kartik Shukla Dwadashi, after Dev Uthani Ekadashi has awakened Vishnu, and is considered the formal start of the wedding season in many parts of India.
Tulsi Vivah samagri
- A healthy Tulsi plant in a decorated pot, and a Shaligram stone or a Vishnu or Krishna idol
- A red chunri, bangles, bindi, sindoor and other suhag items for Tulsi
- Haldi, kumkum, flowers, sugarcane, fruit and sweets
- Mandap decoration with sugarcane stalks, mango leaves and rangoli
Why families perform it
Families who perform Tulsi Vivah seek harmony in the home and blessings for marriages. Households that have no daughter sometimes perform it as a form of kanyadaan, according to tradition.
